1. Extraordinary Miracles (verses 11-12)
2. Extolling the Name of Jesus (verses 13-17)
3. Exposing Their Sinful Practices (verses 18-20)

Over the course of time, year in and year out, various news items rise to the top of our attention. Election cycles drive us to think about politics. The sins of the rich and famous cause us to see our heroes in new light. The rise and fall of stock prices and interest rates thrust us to think about our future security. Technological discoveries give us hope for the future. Sporting championships give us awe at the abilities of the greatest athletes. World-wide pandemics give us reason to think about our mortality. Global conflicts cause us to think about the fragility of our planet. These stories ebb and flow over the weeks and months and years of our lives.

Well, in recent months, one of the dominant stories we have heard about is the war in Ukraine. In fact, it was more than 100 days ago (February 24, 2022), that Russian forces invaded Ukraine. “The invasion caused Europe's fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 7.4 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population displaced.”[1]

This war has given us reason to think afresh about the direction of our world. This is really the first time in our generation that we have seen the reality of war. We have seen and heard about the carnage that takes place when countries go all out in war against one another. We have seen the evils of the hearts of men. It has caused us to think afresh about modern warfare. In fact, I remember recently speaking with a man who was shocked that such a thing could occur in our world today. He said to me, “I can’t believe that this is happening in the 21st century!”

But such a thing is happening. It’s a demonstration to all of us that we have not achieved worldwide peace. Instead, we have been reminded that this world in which we live is a broken place.

Well, this morning, as we enter into a time in God’s word, we will see a city being forced to think about the realities of spiritual warfare. Because, we will see the kingdom of God come and invade the kingdom of this world. Particularly, we will see this battle taking place in the ancient city of Ephesus. This battle is described in our text this morning: Acts 19:11-20. (So, I would encourage you to open your Bibles to Acts 19).

The title of my message this morning is, “Spiritual Warfare in Ephesus,” because this is what took place in Ephesus, when Paul came upon that city. The city of Ephesus was a typical pagan city of the ancient world. It was filled with idols and false worship. Particularly, it was influenced by the cult of Artemis (Acts 19:24). Yet, in Ephesus, particularly, magical practices prevailed. When I say, “Magic,” I’m not talking about slight of hand. I’m talking about sorcery and witchcraft, in which the spiritual forces of demons are sought to be controlled through the power of magical arts.

So when Paul came into this city, he encountered these spiritual forces and battled them head on. Those in Ephesus saw the fight that took place. So, when Paul finished up his letter to the Ephesians, and wrote in the final chapter of spiritual warfare, those in Ephesus would have remembered what took place during his days with them. and they would have taken to heart how to fight the spiritual fight. Paul wrote to them with the following words:

Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

What is remarkable here about these words is that Paul is simply calling us to take up the weapons of our warfare: truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, the word of God and prayer. In other words, when fighting the spiritual warfare that comes our way, we don’t need special techniques. we don’t need special words to rebuke the devil. we don’t need some magical incantations of our own to thwart the plans of the devil. We simply need the basics of the Christian life. We need the truth of the Word of God. We need a righteous life that protects us from evil. We need the gospel of peace to trust and proclaim. We need faith to believe in the gospel. We need to assurance that our salvation brings. We need the Scriptures. We need prayer.

Indeed, this is what we see in the battle that raged at Ephesus. Paul was doing nothing more than preaching the gospel. Calling people to trust in Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who suffered and died for our sins. And God was the one who was doing much of the fighting. So let’s read the text.

Acts 19:11-20
And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.

Before we actually dig into the text, I want to remind you (once again) of the historical context of these words. As we have worked our way through Acts, we have seen Paul take several missionary journeys. Here in Acts 19, we find Paul on his third missionary journey. He went out from his home church in Antioch of Syria, "[He] went from one place to the next through the region of Galatian and Phrygia (Acts 18:23) until he arrived at Ephesus (Acts 19:1), an important city in the ancient world, the capital city of Asia Minor.

Once in Ephesus, Paul established a church there. He spent his time evangelizing the lost, and discipling those who believed. All in all, Paul was in Ephesus for three years (Acts 20:31). His time in Ephesus was truly impactful.

Last week, we looked at verses 8-10, which gave us a summary of how he established the church in Ephesus. This week, we will zoom in to see some of the details of what took place in the city when Paul was there.

Here we see spiritual warfare taking place in the church in Ephesus. The spiritual battle between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. By way of outline this morning, I simply want to make some observations of what was happening in Ephesus during these days. The first thing we see happening in Ephesus is ...

1. Extraordinary Miracles (verses 11-12)

Acts 19:11
And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,

These are the exact words in verse 11 to describe what was happening. Miracles were happening. These miracles were “Extraordinary.” The amplified version (which adds words to give fuller meaning to the text adds that these miracles were “unusual.” That is, they were “extraordinary and unusual” miracles that were taking place. Eugene Peterson, in his translation, the Message, describes these miracles as “quite out of the ordinary.”

Miracles are what God does was when he enters into our existence and doing things that are unexplainable. Now, there are many times that people try to explain how the miracles of Jesus happened. They try to explain away how Jesus walked on water or how he fed the 5,000 or how Jesus raised from the dead. They say that the water was shallow or that the 5,000 people all shared their food or that Jesus never really quite died. But to explain the miracle means that it wasn’t a miracle in the first place. You ought to feel no obligation to explain how any of the miracles in the Bible happened, other than to believe it and say that God simply did it!

But that’s not what’s happening here in Acts 19. We aren’t seeing miracles. We are seeing “Extraordinary miracles.” That puts these miracles in a totally different category. It’s not just a miracle, it’s a MIRACLE! These miracles that God was doing in Ephesus were so unexplainable, that it’s beyond thinking of explanation! Further, miracles were happening in this city, that were not happening in any other city in Paul’s journeys. Not in Philippi or Thessalonica or Berea or Corinth or Athens. They were unique!

The simple observation is this. If these miracles took place only in this city, they weren’t even normative back then. For us today, we ought not to seek such similar miracles. Verse 12 gives us an idea how “extraordinary” these miracles were!

Acts 19:12
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.

The healing touch of Paul was so powerful that he didn’t have to touch the sick himself for them to be healed. Merely the garments that he had worn could be carried to the sick and they were healed. Even more specifically here, these “handkerchiefs” and “aprons” were the working clothes of Paul. If you remember, Paul was a tent-maker. He worked with leather, and, among other things, made tents. When he went to his shop, He put on an apron, to protect his clothes from the oils and the dirt you would find in the shop. These “handkerchiefs” are more technically, “sweat rags.” You might think of them as “bandanas,” that Paul used to stop the sweat from coming down on his face. They were used to wipe the sweat off of his brow. And somehow, the body fluids that were absorbed by these clothes were sufficient to heal the sick and to cast out the evil spirits that had tormented people.

Indeed, these miracles were “extraordinary!”

The closest we have of this in the life of Jesus is that people would come up to Jesus to touch the fringe of his garments. and they were being healed (Matthew 14:36). Perhaps you remember the woman who had a bleeding problem. For 12 years she was bleeding. She reasoned to herself Matthew 9:21 “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well. and she did and she was! she touched his garment, and the bleeding stopped! (Acts 5:15).

Now when it came to Paul, he wasn’t even wearing these healing garments. I’m not sure that Paul even knew that these garments were bring brought to the sick for healing. I wouldn’t be surprised if some well-meaning people were coming into Paul’s shop at night to take these garments and carry them out to the sick for healing. Perhaps they were reasoning, “If they only touch his garments, they will be made well.” and they did and they were. They were touching his sweat rags, and were being healed.

Do you see now why they are called, “extraordinary miracles”? That is, these miracles are so far beyond the miracles that God was doing in the times of the New Testament. I think that the point of these miracles is that they are so far beyond us that we ought not even to try to imitate them. and yet, people do.

There are Pentecostal preachers that are quite willing to send you their prayer cloths, with the promises of healing.[2] One place I found on the internet was selling a little kit, with anointing oil, anointing water and an anointed handkerchief. The website calls it, “The Breakthrough Package.” It comes with instructions: If you need financial breakthrough, spray the water, put some of the oil on the handkerchief and put the handkerchief on or inside your wallet. Pray and declare that the four winds of heaven must locate you. If you need healing, anoint your head with the oil, spray some of the water 3x in your mouth, and put the handkerchief on your body or carry it with you. Make declarations that by His stripes you are Healed. If you are experiencing demonic dreams or visitations at night, spray your pillow with the water, anoint your head with the oil, and put the handkerchief in your pillow. Declare that No Demons can infiltrate your dreams or sleep in Jesus name. If you need deliverance, or are being tormented by demons, anoint your head with oil, and spray your head with the water. Put the handkerchief over your head as you pray spiritual warfare for your deliverance. You can purchase this little kit for $25 (when it comes back into stock). [3]

This is the sort of magic that those in Ephesus were seeking to do. Healing through some sort of magic formula. If you had some sort of difficulty in your life, here’s the magic formula for you to say. This wasn’t what was happening in Ephesus. There was no magic formula. There were no magic words. It was simply the power of God doing “extraordinary miracles.”

I found another website selling “Miracle Handkerchiefs.” This site is not a Christian website. On this site you can read, “The power of the handkerchiefs is from ancient Egyptian spells. The handkerchiefs are from Egypt and spiritually blessed from the land of Obeah, Jamaica, West Indies. Each comes with a special prayer and a spirit to activate the miracle your heart desire. All Handkerchiefs cleanse your aura and remove the imperfections and dark clouds that surround you allowing your desires to flow through into your life. [These] Handkerchiefs turnaround a seemingly impossible situation.”

There is even a site that sells seven different kinds of handkerchiefs, depending upon your need. If you are seeking money, wealth, and success, there is a handkerchief for that. If you are seeking to restore your love life or marriage, there is a handkerchief for that. If you are merely seeking more blessing, there is a handkerchief for that. If you are fearful and seeking protection in your life, there is a handkerchief for that. If you are facing legal difficulties, there is a handkerchief for that. If you like to gamble, there is a handkerchief that will bring you good luck in play.

The website reads, “The ‘Miracle Handkerchief’ comes beautifully designed for Love, Health, Money, Protection, Good Fortune, Court Case, Power and Gambling. This is the one handkerchief you cannot afford not to have. All handkerchiefs comes blessed by our masters and is accompanied by a with a special prayer.” For only $49.99 you can get one in the mail. But they have deals, buy 3, get one free. So, for only $149.97, you can get four miracle handkerchiefs! And if you purchase four handkerchiefs (for $199.96), you will get a fifth one for free![4]

I trust that you can see how far people have strayed from the original context of what took place in Ephesus. People were taking his left-over work clothes and doing “extraordinary miracles” with them. And it demonstrated the unexplained, amazing power of God.

So, why was God doing these “extraordinary miracles?” Many commentators seem to suggest that it was because the occult practice was so common in Ephesus. The Lord gave these great powers to Paul to demonstrate the superiority of the power of God over the power of the occult. This is exactly what we see as our text in our next verses (13-17). we see the occult trying anything to exert their power over the spiritual realm.

Acts 19:13-17

This is the second event that happened in our passage:

2. Extolling the Name of Jesus (verses 13-17)

This is the end result of what was happening in Ephesus.

Acts 19:17
the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.

In fact, this is the entire issue with these verses. It’s the power of the name of Jesus. Look again at verse 13.

Acts 19:13
Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”

These Jewish exorcists are identified further in verse 14.

Acts 19:14
Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.

All that we know about these seven men are contained in these verses. There are identified as “itinerant.” That is, they traveled about. They weren’t from Ephesus. But they had traveled to Ephesus in the course of their healing crusade. In fact, we know that they had traveled from Israel, perhaps from Jerusalem, itself, as they are identified as being “Jewish.”

Verse 14 tells us that they were “sons of a Jewish high priest.” That means that they were of the tribe of Levi. Probably centered in Jerusalem, itself, where the high priests did their work in the temple. We know also that they were “exorcists.” That is, those who “cast out demons” from people. (By the way, Jewish exorcism is alive and well today. See https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/jewish-exorcism/).

So, putting it all together, these seven Jewish brothers had some type of traveling ministry, in which they were casting out demons from people, seeking to make them well again.

Jesus encountered such people. Remember when he was casting out demons? And the Pharisees were saying, Matthew 12:24 “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man cast out demons.” Jesus replied by saying to them, Matthew 12:27 “If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out?”

Apparently, Jesus had encountered (or at least heard about) some Jewish exorcists, who cast out demons. Jesus was simply putting the logic to the Pharisees. Just because someone is casting out demons, doesn’t mean that they from the dark side. otherwise, the Jewish exorcists would have been of Beelzebul as well, (something which the Pharisees would have denied, for sure). Further, Jesus pointed out, that “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?” (Matthew 12:25-26).

This is exactly what we see taking place in Ephesus. We see a divided kingdom, that can’t stand. We see these seven sons, invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”

Now, you need to ask yourself, “Why are they seeking to cast out demons in the name of Jesus?” I think it’s because of what they saw in Paul’s ministry. I think it’s their previous practices were probably failing. This is the thing about those who practice magic arts. They are thieves. Magicians (who see sleight of hand in others), will soon steal their tricks and do the same themselves. So, these Jewish exorcists, as they witnessed the power of the name of Jesus,

We don’t know how they saw the name of Jesus in effect. But we have seen it in Acts. Do you remember when Peter healed up the lame beggar? Peter said to this beggar, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” (Acts 3:6) And the power of the name of Jesus was such that the beggar, "leaping up, ... stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God" (Acts 3:8). Then, when Peter was questioned about it, he stood up to the council and said, "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

There is power in the name of Jesus. There is saving power. Power to save us from our sins, if we but call upon him. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved! There is healing power in the name of Jesus. as the lame beggar rose to his feet and began walking and leaping and praising God. These Jewish exorcists sought to invoke the power of the name of Jesus.

Acts 19:13
“I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”

You almost get the sense that they don’t even know much about Jesus, themselves. and that’s the point. they didn’t know much. And it didn’t go so well.

Acts 19:15
But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”

I love this. The demons know the name of Jesus. Do you remember when Jesus first came on the scene? He showed up in the synagogue in Capernaum, teaching the Scriptures. And a man with a unclean spirit interrupted the service. And said, “I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” (Mark 1:24). And Jesus cast the demon out of the man, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him.” (Mark 1:25). And apparently, news traveled through the demon world, they knew the name of Jesus.

This evil spirit was only somewhat familiar with Paul. The spirit said, “I recognize Paul” (verse 15). apparently, Paul’s fame was not as great as the fame of Jesus. (which is as it should be). But then comes the question, “But who are you?” (verse 15). Soon afterwards, the evil spirit turned upon them. It didn’t fare so well for these sons of Sceva.

Acts 19:16
And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Picture it. This evil spirit was so powerful that he overpowered these seven sons of Sceva and roughed them up a bit. This evil spirit ripped the clothes off of their bodies. And they fled the house “naked and wounded.”

Now, I’m not going to show you a picture of what this might have looked like. You can only imagine. But I’m picturing streakers at a stadium. Those who rip off their clothes and run onto the field, and make a mad dash for it, evading all of the officials in search of their five minutes of fame. Only, these streakers were running for cover. They were running to find place of safety. Such was the power of a single evil spirit! This is the result of a kingdom being divided against itself.

And what was the result?

Acts 19:17
And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.

This is my point, "Extolling the Name of Jesus." Here were these Jewish people, who didn’t even know Jesus, using the name of Jesus for their own ends. Sadly, this is a picture of many people today, who simply use the name of Jesus to get what they want.

I heard it said recently that the Health, Wealth, and Prosperity gospel of our previous generation has been replaced, with the gospel of Self-fulfillment. In other words, as Millennials today priorities experience over stuff, so also are the Millennials of today seeking to use Jesus for their own ends.

That’s how the gospel comes to many today. “Do you want to experience your full potential?” Jesus will help you do that. “Do you want to be a better you?” Jesus will help you do that. “Do you want to kick your bad habits and be productive?” Jesus will help you do that. “Do you want to be successful in life?” Jesus will help you do that. It’s really not much different than the Jewish exorcists here in Ephesus. They wanted to do good by casting out evil spirits. They saw that Jesus could do it for them. So, they invoked his name.

Many do this today. They read their Bible, they come to church, because of what Jesus will do for them. But this isn’t the gospel (It’s true that Jesus transforms us, but this isn’t the gospel). The gospel isn’t for us to be all that we can be. The gospel is for us to survive standing before a holy God, who is angry with our sin.

I was talking with week with someone who hated the idea of hell. She thought that the whole idea was unfair. Life is hard and difficult. And then, you spend eternity in a more difficult place. She said, “I don’t like that.” I said, “But when you realize that the solution to escape hell is as difficult as a cry to God, you have no complaints. To escape hell, you simply need to come to the end of yourself and admit that life is hard and you need mercy.”

Many refuse this simple message.

Finally, let’s look at my last point.

3. Exposing Their Sinful Practices (verses 18-20)

Acts 19:18-19
Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.

This is repentance. The believers came and openly confessed their sinful ways. They were “confessing and divulging their practices.” They were telling of their evil ways before coming to faith in Christ. And they handed over their books. Because, for them, these magical books, full of spells was a thing of the past. They were done with it. Magicians were being transformed.

I remember the college revivals that came in 1995. The format of the revivals were simple. A group was gathered. A microphone was placed in the front of the room. Students were asked to come and confess their sins. There were lines and line of people who came to confess their sins. Some groups had placed garbage bins at the front of the auditorium. Many pornographic magazines were brought to the front and thrown in the trash. this took place even at Christian colleges.

Are there things that you need to confess today? Do you need to throw away your phone? Are there books on your shelves that need to be tossed in the fire?

I thought about having a bonfire here at church. I thought about you bringing a book from home that is bad. We would burn everybody's books after church as a giant object lesson for all to remember. There are many things that might not turn out so well about this activity, so I decided against it. Yet still there may be books in your home that need to be thrown away. What is there in your life that you need to take and destroy? Tapes? CD's? Photographs? Things that you just don't need in your life.

That's repentance, exposing sinful practices. These people believed and demonstrated their belief by confession and turning from their sin.

This verse speak about how much money this was. It was "fifty thousand pieces of silver." Do you know how much that was in our dollars today? A lot! These books held a lot of value. There was a lot of money invested in these books containing their magical arts. And they willingly gave them up. They didn't have the thought of how much they had invested, which couldn't be squandered by destroying the books.

This practice of book burning has been done throughout the history of the world. In the 1500's, the Roman Catholic Church held a bonfire, in which all of the books of Martin Luther were burned in public. It was an attempt to wipe away the contents of his writings from the face of the earth.

Are there things that you need to get out of your house? The result of all of this comes in verse 20.

Acts 19:20
So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.

It was God's word that increased. Verse 20 is one of those summary statements in the book of Acts, where Luke steps back to summaries the progress of the gospel across the world. Notice also that it was not the techniques used by the Christian preachers who somehow tricked people into believing. No. It was the truth that was going forth and prevailing mightily in the lives of people.

In fact, consider this: how much did Paul actively engage in this spiritual warfare in Ephesus? Hardly anything.

Think about those today who are experts in spiritual warfare. What do they do? They bring everybody up. They pray over somebody. They speak in tongues. They say some magical, spiritual formula. Such charismatic preachers today demand that everyone come to them for a cure. But how much did Paul do in Ephesus? Paul wasn't even around.

These people were trying to do something spiritual and magical by bringing up magical incantations with the name of Jesus. And Paul was in the school preaching and teaching the truth of the Scriptures.

Spiritual warfare was being waged as people put on the breastplate of righteousness and the belt of truth. As those in Ephesus put on their feet the readiness given by the gospel of peace, spiritual warfare was succeeding. They took up the shield of faith, put on the helmet of salvation, took up the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. They were praying always. Thus they were engaging in spiritual battle.

This is how to fight spiritual warfare. Not with incantations, but with a righteous life focused on the basics of faith and trust in our Messiah.

Even here in this text we see the "extra-ordinary" miracles. Yet, Paul still wages spiritual warfare in the most common of ways, with truth and righteousness. It was God who was doing the miracles. And the exorcists, try as they might, failed miserably. But the word of the Lord went out mightily.

May that happen with us. May those outside see our repentance in our trust in Christ. And the word of Christ go forth and prevail mightily.
